Why You Must Establish A Mailing List For Your Site Sooner Than Later
If you’ve been digging around the internet for information on boosting sales, you’ve probably hit at least a hundred topics regarding building an email list. Let me start by saying, they are all accurate!
If you have any intention of profiting from your online business, whether it be a blog or something else, you should set up an email newsletter right away. Email addresses are like gold and converting them to paid customers is just as rewarding.
I’m going to share my success stories when it comes to a mailing list and how you can easily get set up with one to start growing a following and turning a profit.
Let me start by saying that I didn’t start to establish a mailing list on my first blog, The Polyglot Developer, until two years after I started blogging. I wish I had started it earlier.
The Benefits of a Mailing List
There are several benefits to having a mailing list which fall in the realm of financial benefits and loyal following benefits.
Gathering a Loyal Following and Their Email Addresses
Not everyone uses social media, or uses it in a traditional sense. People might find your content interesting and want to know whenever you have something to say. These are people who want to follow you.
The thing about mailing lists is you need an email. Most of the time an email address is considered sensitive information. This is information that is only shared with trusted individuals. By obtaining email sign ups you are further validating that people are legitimately interested in what you’re offering.
The goal here is that when you tell your email subscribers something, they take action.
Converting Leads to Paying Customers
In my opinion, this is the thing that matters when it comes to a mailing list. A mailing list is an opportunity to convert those loyal followers or leads into paying customers.
Let me tell a story about my own success in this area.
I have a few software development courses listed online. Whenever I send out my newsletter I will advertise one of these courses. Every time I advertise a course in one of my newsletters I receive a few hundred dollars in purchases. Not enough to quit my day job, but certainly a nice amount of money every month.
The more followers you have the more money you stand to earn.
Why You Should Start List Building Early
Now I mentioned that I earn a few hundred dollars every month from my courses through my mailing list. Let me also mention that as of now I have no other paid content.
Like I mentioned, the more subscribers you have, the more money you can potentially earn from them. As of right now I have roughly 1,500 email subscribers to The Polyglot Developer, a blog that has existed for a little more than three years and has had an email list for less than a year.
Let’s make some assumptions here. I gathered roughly 1,500 subscribers in about a year. If that trend maintains and had I started collecting from day one, I would have roughly 4,500 subscribers.
What if my course enrollments grew 3x with the growth of the list? This may not happen, but what if it did?
Let’s look at this from a different perspective. As I’ve mentioned in several posts already, it takes time to become recognized online. When you’ve finally “made it” don’t assume that you’re going to get a million email sign ups. It takes time.
What are Your Options for List Building
There are many options when it comes to list building. I am personally using MailChimp because it is trusted by a lot of people, it is affordable, and it accomplishes all my needs. Let’s take a look at some of the other options.
Like I already mentioned, I’m currently using MailChimp for my mailing list. As of right now it accomplishes everything I need.
Let’s take a look at some of the things that MailChimp offers.
MailChimp offers a very attractive what you see is what you get (WYSIWYG) email designer that can be paired with many pre-made templates and themes.
There is a free tier for anyone with less than 2,000 subscribers. With it you’ll be able to send campaign emails to your list. The paid tier lets you do more. With it you get particularly useful features like automation workflows. For example you can create a workflow to send out emails on a schedule to new subscribers.
An interesting thing about MailChimp is that if you use two factor authentication (2FA), you will get a 10% discount in the paid tier.
ConvertKit is one of the more popular email marketing services. ConvertKit has pretty much the same features as MailChimp, but things work a little differently. For example with ConvertKit if you have duplicate subscribers across multiple lists, they only count as a single subscriber. This can potentially reduce fees.
A major advantage to using ConvertKit is that you can have multiple sign up forms. Why is this useful? If you have a business on multiple subject material, you can have a different form for each subject. This way your email campaigns can target the more specific audience per form.
Although there are plenty of other differences, another highlight I find attractive is the ability to use more advanced automated workflows. Depending on subscribers interact with emails, they can then be placed automatically in other workflows.
Aweber may be one of the older list building services. I often hear it is the service people start with before moving onto something else.
With this service you’ll get a email templates, integration with popular services like PayPal, and various automation workflow tools.
Aweber is a great way to get started when it comes to mailing lists.
SendInBlue is a service I thought about using when I was evaluating which to choose. At the time, had I not chosen MailChimp, I would have chosen SendInBlue because of its price point. It is significantly cheaper than all the other list building services making it more attractive to people who are experimenting with email lists and don’t want to spend large amounts of money.
Like with the other list building services, it offers a clean WYSIWYG editing interface and attractive templates making it easy to get campaigns started.
Mailing lists are a great way to boost product sales. Email addresses are like gold because people tend to only share them with people they trust. When building your business, the sooner you get your list started, the better off you’ll be when it comes time to convert leads to sales.
There are many great list building services available. MailChimp, ConvertKit, Aweber, and SendInBlue are all great services that are actually very similar. With their minor differences, choosing comes down to your needs.
